2002 Boys Red Return to Defend their National Championship

The 2019 US Youth Soccer National Championships, which will feature top teams in the 13U through 19U age groups, kick off Tuesday, July 23, with games running through Sunday, July 28.

Arlington Soccer Association is so very proud that our 2002 Boys Red team are returning to defend their national championship in Overland Park, Kansas.

The Journey Back to the Championships

"No pain, no gain!” is a phrase that sums up where the team found themselves against the OC Boca Juniors in April. The game between the two sides was to determine who would go on to advance to this years National USYS Championship Series via the National League. After losing a heartbreaking state cup in the Fall, the defending National Champions wanted to create a different result, which was their only hope at defending the crown.

After a hard-fought match by both sides, the ASA Red ‘02 Boys found themselves on the right side of things, with a 3-0 victory. The victory propelled the boys into the Elite 8 final at this years USYS National Championships. With a pool of 3 competitive teams to go through first, the ASA ‘02 Red Boys team has its sights on a second title.

What is the US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP)?
The U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program was formed in 1977 to identify a pool of players in each age group from which a National Team will be selected for international competition; to provide high-level training to benefit and enhance the development of players at all levels; and, through the use of carefully selected and licensed coaches, develop a mechanism for the exchange of ideas and curriculum to improve all levels of coaching.

Girls 03 Pre-DA Team Advances to the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series Eastern Regional Championships

Congratulations to our 2003 Girls Pre-Development Academy team for advancing to the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series Eastern Regional Championships being held in Charleston and Barboursville, West Virginia June 28-July 4.

Excerpted from an article prepared by EDPSoccer.com:

"The team yielded only one goal in EDP Atlantic Development League play…while scoring 31!  Arlington posted eight clean sheets in its final eight league games and finished the season with a 9-0-1 record to finish at the top of the table and clinch a spot in the US Youth Soccer Eastern Regional Championships.

Arlington, the No. 1 team in Virginia, has also performed well in tournaments over the past few years.  Those showings, along with its solid results against the strong competition in the EDP League has Arlington feeling confident heading into Regionals.

“Our team’s work ethic is unmatched,” Head Coach Mo Tayari commented.  “I am fortunate to coach a team that has such natural chemistry, both on and off the field.”'

Arlington Soccer Unveils Updated Logo

Press Release

Arlington Soccer Unveils Updated Logo

Arlington, VA, May 31, 2019: Arlington Soccer revealed a new and modern logo today.

“Arlington Soccer is proud to announce today a refresh of our core brand elements including an updated logo. The new look reflects the growth and development of Arlington Soccer over the past five decades,” said Adam Brick, Executive Director. “The new logo is a symbol of our ‘One Club’ vision where all players are at the center of our mission and we strive to create an environment that empowers youth and strengthens community.”

Arlington Soccer has grown to serve almost 9,000 players per year and more than 6,000 families through a wide variety of after-school programs, camps, clinics, recreational, developmental and travel soccer.

“The modernization of the Arlington Soccer brand coincides with the 50 th anniversary of the Club. As we move closer to 2020, we will mark this milestone in several ways beginning with this fresh new look for our brand,” said Allie Signorelli, Board President.

Included in the rebranding, Arlington Soccer will adopt a new official club abbreviation: ARL. “The strength of our brand, particularly on the national and regional level, is the name Arlington and the new abbreviation provides consistency across our programs,” said German Peri, Director of Coaching. The abbreviation ‘ARL’ replaces the use of ‘ASA’.

Melanie Roberts, a seasoned graphic designer, assisted Arlington Soccer in the design of the logo. Her children have played soccer for the Club and Melanie served a volunteer coach. She has worked on corporate branding and identity projects for more than twenty years. Some of her past work can be seen at https://www.behance.net/gallery/23335069/Logos.

About Arlington Soccer: Founded in 1970, Arlington Soccer provides quality soccer programs and experiences for people of all abilities, backgrounds and financial means to encourage personal growth, promote a love for the game, and advance soccer in Arlington and surrounding communities. Arlington Soccer offers recreational, developmental and travel soccer, as well as a number of camps and clinics to more than 9,000 children per year. Arlington Soccer is dedicated to providing participants with the opportunity to learn, have fun, and reach their full potential.

History of Arlington Soccer

Later this week, in anticipation of its 50th Anniversary in 2020, Arlington Soccer will unveil a revised and more modern logo. Let’s take a quick look back to the origins of the club.

Recreational youth soccer in Arlington, VA began in 1968. It was started by the Arlington County Department of Recreation with four boy’s teams for ages 15 and under. Games were played at Tuckahoe field on Sycamore Street. Games were scheduled, referees assigned, and fields lined by County personnel (as they did for other sports).

In January 1970, a group of soccer parents wanting to enlarge the youth soccer program met and formed Arlington Soccer Association (Arlington Soccer). When Arlington Soccer asked to be able to play soccer during the spring months, the County made fields available but due to budgetary restraints said that they could only provide personnel for a fall soccer program. In many ways, that decision of the County was the defining moment in the life of the Arlington Soccer. Volunteers began registering players, scheduling games, arranging for the assignment of referees, lining fields and otherwise taking over the management of the youth soccer program.

By the fall of 1970, the soccer program had expanded to 20 boy’s teams with U15 and U12 divisions of 10 teams each. Registration increased to 300 players. Today, over four decades later, the Arlington Soccer recreation program is made up of 6,000 players on more than 550 teams from Arlington and Falls Church.

A major factor in the growth of Arlington Soccer was the inclusion of girls in the Recreational soccer program. While girls did participate on some teams during those early years, the Association started forming all-girl teams in the fall of 1973.

Another milestone of the club was the development of travel teams. Initially, all-star teams were created early in Arlington Soccer’s history to play in tournaments over holidays. From those early all-star teams developed the Travel program, which now has 90+ teams playing in national and regional leagues. In 2018, the U16 Boys team won the club’s first US Youth Soccer National Championship.

In February 2020, Arlington Soccer will host a celebration to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the club.

Arlington Soccer Introduces New Pilot Program for Elementary School Aged Girls

Arlington Soccer Initiative to Reach Out to Elementary School Aged Girls

In partnership with Arlington County Extended Day and the 4-H program, Arlington Soccer has created Girls with Goals - a new pilot program for elementary aged girls.  After realizing that elementary aged girls are under-represented in the Arlington Soccer Rec program, we wanted to find a way to encourage them to try the sport.  Girls with Goals is a six week, no-cost afterschool club designed to eliminate the potential barriers of transportation and cost, which may limit some girls’ participation. We hope to continue this program and expand to other Title 1 schools around the County, where we believe transportation and cost may present significant obstacles for families. In the pilot program, sessions are coached by professional coach, Candace Chapman, with the assistance of two high school students. Each session includes 4-H character building activities, designed to reinforce the principles of fairness and sportsmanship.  You can also read recent local press about the endeavor here.
