United Soccer Coaches Convention Recap

United Soccer Coaches hosted their annual Coaches Convention in Baltimore, MD last week. This convention is an opportunity to gather coaches across the country to further educate and collaborate through seminars, meet and greets, and on-field demos. With hundreds of presenters, coaches have the opportunity to expand on their knowledge of not only the game itself but also the role that a coach can and should play in their players' life. With topics ranging from defensive formation to mental health and advocacy programs, this convention is a unifying voice across coaches of all levels.

Arlington Soccer was well represented with 16 staff members in attendance. This was an important opportunity for the staff to engage with other coaches and attend the various presentations to not only improve as individuals and coaches but also to support the growth of our Arlington Soccer players and community. Through this convention, our representatives have already brought back several ideas on how we can continue to support the development of our players on and off the field, further engage with our community, and promote the education of our coaches.

This convention was also host to several award ceremonies, including a very special award to our Arlington family. At the US Youth Soccer Awards Gala, John Mingus was awarded the National Volunteer of the Year. This honors individuals who are excellent role models in their community. John’s willingness to promote players, soccer and incredible character on and off the field has increased opportunities for individuals throughout our community.

In anticipation of his award, two of John’s close colleagues and friends were interviewed. Neither held back their high praises of John and all he has done. David Gould, the Recreation Director at Arlington Soccer, has known John for around 6 years and has learned not only the technical aspects of the game as well as the intricacies of what it means to be a leader. Brian Plesser, the Recreation Chair at Arlington Soccer, credits John as his mentor and inspiration noting “when I think of community-based soccer, I think of John Mingus”.

For John, this award brought tears to his eyes as he struggled to find the words to express his gratitude and appreciation for the award. His passion for working with soccer and bringing the game all he can is showcased through his efforts and engagement for almost two decades. The winners to him, are all of the kids in Arlington and he is so grateful for the honor noting it as “perhaps the coolest thing that’s ever happened”.

Thank you, John, for all you do and have done - - you are so appreciated and we are beyond grateful to have you in the Arlington Soccer Family!
